lumemiruuuuuuuuuuuwell i have some news :3!!
i'll offically change schools. after having thoughtful discussions wiht my mother, hearing my parents bithc about the school and realizing that as i have nothing to lose as i'll graduate in 2 years and anyway i have nothing to do at my current school aside from suffering on group proyects. and i'll be able to bring my phone there so :D. ig i'll do nothing for the rest year then.
i have also watched some films these weeks (one battle after another and sinners) jst to be ready for awards season, and here are my thoughts:
for sinners, i must say that film had a wild yet very well done tonal shift, which is insane like wdym u can go from a slice-of-life ish movie to a full on massacre. peak cinema. i do thing it should've been longer. yes ik we spent an hour stablishing the characters, no i dont think that was enough. did that make the murders any less thouching? absolutely no. but i would've appreciated it lol. yeah the scenes at the juke pint were fantastical, and again, the tonal shift was very well done, can see why people love it. only complain is that i watched it with the spanish dub, and i missed the little minor fact that REMMICK IS IRISH. AND AFTER READING A BUNCH OF ANAYLISIS'S ON TUMBLR I REALIZED THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. fuck dubs, and i NEED a rewatch with a decent experience
for one battle after another, to say i was hyped up would be an understantement. i must admit i hadnt watched any of pta's films before this one, but one cant help it after hearing wonders about there wil be blood (I SERIOUSLY NEED TO WATCH IT. corrupted rich people is one of my favorite character flavors), magnolia and boogie nights. it got the point that the first time i watched it (i was with some kids of my mom's friends) i instantly ran to the cinema to but tickets as we were like 5 minutes late and i ended up losing them lol. well anyway i couldnt finish it anyway as they left to get high for like 1 hour and one of them had a bad trip yeah yeah whatever. good thing i managed to finish it yesterday :3
to the point, the prologue fucking rocks, the action scenes are beautifully coreographed, the score is the true mvp of the movie as it manages to be very catchy yet anxiety-inducing (though it doesnt work as well by itself), benicio del toro gave the most charming performance out of the entire cast, even though most of the performances were awesome, the final car chase sequence was also incredibly shot. yeah this shit is technically a banger, and is pretty entretaining by itself
HOWEVER...even if all the positive aspects prevent me from hating it fully...i have my complaints about the writting. character wise, we needed more to the releationship between willa and bob, as we only had a few moments between them where they didnt seem to be on the best of terms, so seeing them loving eachother at the end simply bc they went through awful shit doesnt seem to be fully logical to me. also, thinking abt it, perfidia's character was VERY sexualized and didnt had nothing much aside from that, which is lowkey racist taking into acc she's a black woman. and i do agree with the critics that call out the lack of development regarding the ideology of the french 75, which yeah yeah the politics are clearly not the point (imo) the point are the characters, BUT ideologies certainly influence your way of being, SPEECIALLY ON THOSE CIRCUMSTACES, so it would've helped to bring more depth (saying this this way as i dont have a very clear political reason of why the lack of depth is wrong, and i dont wanna sound disengenous). same for willa, specially as she pulls a deux ex machina at the end cause she somehow knows how to manage cool ass guns OUT OF KNOWHERE, and the psychological consequences off all the mess he got herself in werent rlly explored, unlike with bob's character. i dont have many problems with lockjaw's character, as im sure the point of the film was to show how pathetic white supremacists are, but as they have so much power, they can literally do as much shit as they want, which i personally find scary. which ig makes up for how weak the central conflict can be sometimes (we definetly needed more info abt that white supremacist club thing now that i think about it, as lockjaw already had a lot of power, so he wasnt losing anything aside from that membership if he left willa alone. maybe they could've stablished said club is influential within lockjaw's work or smth, so maybe we couldve understodd him a bit better, and i dont think this wouldve affected the satirical tones of lockjaw's character, as maybe they couldve satarized even further his enviroment or himself). and this is jst character-wise, as most critics i personally agree with also touch on the more politcal aspects of the film, but im barely educated on that so no for me.
but again, i seriously cant bring myself to rate this any lower than a 7.6/10, as the technical stuff and the perfomarmances are far too strong to not feel as if im being extremely rough for doign so. i need to re-watch it, someday, where im not concerned about waking up my mom as she fell asleep for the 15th time throughout the movie or someone's bad trip. hope this hits streaming soon to not watch a shitty recording of a screening
i have also been reading csm to be ready for the movie (even though im liking the manga more than the anime, BUT the animation looks stunning, the ost is awesome as everything by kensuke goatshio, AND FUCKING JANE DOE. jane doe rules, iris out too but jane doe does even more, which makes sense as it features the hikaru utada and kenshi yonezu combo), even though im sure i wont watch it (SPECIALLY AS THE ONLY SCREENINGS OF THE SUBBED VERSION ARE AT 10PM. and if you couldnt tell alrady, im a sub purist lol) due to my dear mother. also started to draw again AFTER SO LONG. im doing jinu from kpdh :3. also read 1984 and yeah it lived up to the hype, really like the simple history that allows the characters to shine yet still has a very strong political substance :3
